New Antibiotics—Resistance Is Futile
نویسنده
چکیده
PLoS Biology | http://biology.plosjournals.org By next summer, more than 40% of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains in the United States will resist both penicillin and erythromycin, according to a recent prediction from the Harvard School of Public Health. The forecast, based on mathematical modeling, was published in the spring of 2003. It’s too early to tell whether that prediction is precisely on track, according to the senior author on that paper, Marc Lipsitch. But no one doubts that multidrug resistance in this common bug—responsible for diseases that range from sinus trouble and ear infections to meningitis and pneumonia—is speeding up. It is the certain fate of all antibacterials to be fought off eventually by the pathogens they target. The fact that the process is accelerating has been alarming public health offi cials for some time, especially in the United States. We need new ways to defeat disease, and we will need them forever.

Resistance is futile: the bacteriocin model for addressing the antibiotic resistance challenge.
Pathogenic bacteria resistant to many or all antibiotics already exist. With the decline in microbiological research at pharmaceutical companies, the high rate at which resistance has evolved and spread has demanded a novel approach to addressing this critical human health issue. In the present paper, we propose a new paradigm in antibiotic discovery and development, one that applies ecological...
متن کاملNew update on molecular determinants of colistin resistance in bacteria
Colistin relates to the polymyxin group of antibiotics. This antibiotic is still used to destroy gram-negative bacteria as a last resort. However, resistance to this antibiotic has been reported and is appearing day by day. Not much information is available on the exact mechanisms of resistance to this antibiotic. Also, not enough information about pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics is avail...
متن کاملThe delivery of futile care is harmful to other patients.
OBJECTIVE Intensive care units (ICUs) in different parts of the world provide care to patients with advanced age and terminal illness at different rates and in different patterns. In the United States, ICU beds make up a disproportionate number of acute care beds. Nearly half of all patients who die in U.S. hospitals have received ICU, some of which may be futile. The objective of this study wa...

Introduction: Acinetobacter baumannii is one of the most important nosocomial and community-acquired pathogens that is resistant to many antibiotics. Toxin-antitoxin systems are regulatory systems that maintain bacteria and serve as new targets for Antimicrobial therapies are considered. The prevalence and transcription of these systems in clinical isolates is still unknown. The aim of this stu...
